I first learned of Dr. Husted through two of my fellow teachers. Both were scheduled to have surgery in the summer of 2001, and both had the same insurance (BC/BS of TN PPO) as I did. I remember thinking, "I would never be able to go through with surgery, but wouldn't it be wonderful!"

Meanwhile, Sally and I did some research about WLS and Dr. Husted in particular. The more we discovered about Dr. Husted, the more we knew he would be the doctor for us. Following Lori and Mary Beth's surgeries and their success, we quickly scheduled to attend a seminar and a consult on the same day.

From that day forward, our lives will never be the same! I have never met two medical professionals who are more compassionate and considerate of their patients than Dr. Husted and Jamie. That day, for the first time in my life, I left the doctor's office without feeling like a horrible person who had "let myself go." I was overwhelmed by their impeccable attention to detail. They answered every question without making us feel intimidated (like some doctors have tried to do in the past) and were genuinely interested in helping us live with a greater quality of life.

We also were privileged to meet another fantastic individual that day--Janet. Throughout our struggle with BC/BS, Janet was always there with an encouraging word. She, too, had our best interest at heart. Without her help, our surgeries would not have been possible.

As I look back over the last year, I cannot begin to express to you the emotions that I have experienced. I have currently lost 243 pounds and feel like I am living in a dream world! My health is 200% better than before. I am no longer taking medication for high blood pressure. I can sleep through an entire night and not feel worse than before I slept. My swollen legs are much, much smaller (pre-op my calf was 29", now it's 19".) I can walk to my upstairs classroom without taking several rest stops to get there.

My self esteem has improved. I can sit in a theater seat and not touch the sides.
I can sit in a booth at a restaurant and not be wedged in. I can buy clothes at a "regular store"--sorry King Size Direct, cancel my subscription!

My wonderful wife Sally has made this journey so much easier. She has helped me through the rough spots and celebrated with me too. We have truly been blessed--much more than we deserve!
