As most of us, I have been heavy all my life. The whole family
is heavy. One day, after trying diet after diet and being
made fun of by everyone, I decided, enough was enough. I started
searching for answers. I did research, and found ObesityHelp.com.
Finally, a place where people really understood what I was
going through. After doing some research, I decided that I
wanted the Duodenal Switch. I found a surgeon in my area,
and made the appointment. When I went, he told me that he
did not do the Duodenal Switch, and that the procedure he
did, the RNY, would probably not be the best course for me.
I then did more research, and found another surgeon in Georgia.
I contacted him, and did all the required tests and such.
In about September of 2000, I started having a cough, which
is not unusual for me. I have really bad sinus problems. However,
this cough didn't go away. By February, I was in our local
hospital dying. I was losing lung volume as well as lung efficiency.
I was discharged from my hospital on my planned surgery date
in Georgia. I went home on oxygen, and stayed on it for several
months. I contacted my surgeon in Georgia, and went down to
see him. He sent me to his pulmonologist. They both declined
to continue with the surgery. What a let down after all those
months of fighting the insurance company.
Then entered the Jamie/Dr. Husted factor.
I received an email from someone that I didn't even know.
Asking me why I didn't go to Dr. Husted. I told her that I
had already called them, and they didn't do the Duodenal Switch.
(Which at that time they didn't.) She insisted they did, so
I gave them a call...and they did!!! I contacted Jamie, and
within ten days from contact, I was on the table. Now mind
you, this was an unusual case, so don't expect yours to go
like that. I already had all tests and insurance approval,
just had to tell the insurance I was changing surgeons.
They were great. Dr. Husted was very upfront
about the risks, and told me it was my decision. The whole
staff there, and at Baptist Hospital made me feel like I was
their only patient. They took care of Jeff, my husband, too,
since we are about five hours out of town.
My loss went very slow. I had a pinched nerve
in my back and had a very difficult time walking. It took
8 months before I could walk unaided.
On Feb 12, 2004, I underwent a revision to
my DS. My loss had not been what we and Dr. H had hoped. There
are several ways to revise a DS, he chose to move the intestinal
connection lower to cause more malabsorption. The surgery
went perfect and the healing phase was a breeze. It was nothing
like the original surgery. As always, I could not have been
in more perfect hands.
Jamie and Dr. Husted were always there for
us, no matter how trivial the question. They are just the
best in the world and I have no problem ever sending anyone
to them.
By the year 2007, I have undergone several
skin reduction surgeries. One in my home town, and the rest
in California by Dr. Timothy Katzen. God has blessed me with
wonderful surgeons and support staff through out my whole
journey.
I welcome anyone to contact me to discuss
anything. I am here for you! I know this road is hard but
it is our friends that help us through the hard times. And
it is my mission in life that if I cannot find a cure, then
I will help as many as possible through the journey to freedom.
My email is sherri@carvercentral.com and
is always open to you.
